KIDS ON ROLL

Here's how to help your fussy eater!

Children's world is too exciting for them to consider eating mundane food. But that doesn't stop them from needing nutrition, does it? You must be wondering how you can assist them maintain a healthy diet.

In this guide, we'll tell you exactly how you can help your fussy eater have a healthy relationship with food.

1. Encourage discipline gently

While it is important to discipline, you need to make sure you do it the right way. Don't even punish or bribe them for not eating healthy food or food at all. It's normal for toddlers to be really hungry once and not so much the next day. Don't punish them for being who they are- that's neither fair nor will this help them anyway.

Don't bribe children to eat healthy food in exchange for chocolate. This will only make them see healthy choices unworthy of eating.

It's difficult to find balance while disciplining a young child. Don't give him/her too much attention either as they develop behavioural patterns based on how you react to them.

2. Be creative

Try to make eating food as exciting as you possibly can for them! Use bright colours, appealing texture and aroma to make them want to eat it.

Sometimes, they are just too distracted playing to be hungry. If they skip a meal, don't feel guilty about it as it's not your fault. Try to have some quiet time before you get to eat to help them calm down and if they still don't eat, prepare some light snack when they feel hungry. Don't let them fill up on drinks either.

3. Practice what you preach

While children have different tastes as compared to adults, they do follow and learn from their parents. If you tend to avoid healthy fruits and veggies, your child will most likely do that too. If you start to genuinely appreciate certain food, they will too. It's literally that easy!

4. Ask them to help you

Your child is more likely to eat what they help prepare. Don't ask them to cook but you can ask them to grab veggies from the refrigerator, wash them for you or let them choose which ones to cook. Let them choose between healthy items, for example, "carrot or cabbage" so they'll want to eat whatever they choose.

5.Keep a food log

Recording what your child eats throughout the week will help you get a better picture of your child's eating pattern. You're already taking care of his nutritional needs if you're reading about how you can help him. Don't worry more than you have to. If you're too concerned, consult  your doctor about your child's growth.

6. Be patient

You are more likely to make a difference in your child's life if you allow him/her to be who he/she is. Children require a lot of patience to take care of, they don't always understand what's best for them and that's okay- that's how they are supposed to be. Even if they were more aware of their surroundings and needs, no one likes to be forced to do anything, even if it's for their own welfare. Make small changes everyday so the transition into proper and healthy eating feels natural to your toddler.

Final thoughts

Sometimes you have to become a child yourself to understand what your child needs and wants. Get in touch with your inner child to help your child be the best version of who he is. Try being fussy about food yourself sometimes to bond with them. They are more likely to listen to you, if they can relate with you, what you do and what you say. Lastly, trust yourself more than anything, you can do it!
